Gilley’s Mud Flap via “American Pickers”

Gilley's Mud Flap from "American Pickers" show.

As many of you already know, the hit television show “American Pickers” did a show last year primarily around buying Gilley’s memorabilia from Mickey Gilley and that one of the most popular “picks” was a pair of Gilley’s truck mud flaps that they had Mickey autograph for them.

That episode originally aired on September 5, 2011 featuring Mike and Frank, owners of Antique Archaeology, visiting a warehouse in Texas where Mickey Gilley has a bunch of old Gilley’s beer cans, plastic cups, a neon Gilley’s Beer sign and other assorted memorabilia from the original Pasadena, Texas Gilley’s club.

The boys immediately jumped on the mud flaps when they spotted them hanging on the wall. Being much more rare than the things that were mass produced for merchandise sales at the club, they made a deal to buy both if Mickey Gilley would autograph them, which he happily did. Mickey said that to the best of his knowledge they were the only 2 Gilley’s mud flaps still in existence.  Here is a short clip of Mike, Frank, Mickey Gilley, and the mud flaps.

GilleysMuseum.com was able to obtain one of the two mud flaps from a gentleman who purchased them in Nashville, TN and gave the other to his son. This mud flap measures approximately 24″ x 24″ and weighs about 6 pounds. The off-white hard rubber body is 1/4″ thick and is backed with a stiff black astro-turf like material that is about 1/2″ thick that starts about 3 inches below the top so as to not interfere with the four mounting holes along the top.

Here is a picture of the front of our Gilley’s mud flap from that “American Pickers” episode with the autograph “Mickey Gilley 2011” in the lower left corner.

Here is a close-up of Mickey Gilley’s autograph. Notice the shakiness of the writing as Mickey was recovering from a serious accident when the show was filmed and his injured hand impacted on his ability to write.

    • Sorry Donald, but there’s a LONG line of people who would love to buy Mickey Gilley’s autographed mud flap from the American Pickers show but it’s not for sale. It is a permanent and valued part of the GilleysMuseum.com collection.
