Gilley’s Leather Saddle – Rare Find!
Posted by gilleysmuseum.com on January 3, 2011 · Leave a Comment
Hey ya’ll. I just had to post this picture of a rare hand made Gilley’s Leather Saddle! It’s almost exactly 12 inches from the tip of each stirrup when laid stretched out as pictured and 5 inches from front to back of the saddle itself. This saddle was originally given to a Pasadena, Texas Gilley’s employee by Mickey Gilley back around 1980 and is now in the GilleysMuseum.com collection.
The saddle is padded with wool underneath and has great detail. Click on the picture to see it full screen. I have seen no mention of this leather saddle anywhere in any of Gilley’s catalogs or other materials, nor have I seen it mentioned anywhere on the internet, so its rarity is undefineable at this point. If anyone out there has any further info please let me know.
More later,
Bubba
February, 2013 Update:
During Mickey Gilley’s visit to GilleysMuseum.com after his performance at Treasure Island in Las Vegas he told us that to the best of his memory this leather saddle was a one-of-a-kind prototype. Along with several other similar items in our collection he was amazed to see it as part of our collection and happy to see it was not lost to history. Dilemma solved.
